SpectaSport’s “Contemporary Connected Race Timing” technology is race timing for today’s world. No more waiting for results, no backups at the finish line and happier runners. Plus, read on to see how one sports medicine doctor said that SpectaSport’s technology actually makes your race safer.
It’s the 21st century, why are runners waiting for their results to be posted? SpectaSport provides not only the most accurate race timing results, we provide them to runners instantaneously with our easy-to-use results kiosks (including their age group standings!) Other race timing companies promise to post results on the internet “by Monday or Tuesday”, while SpectaSport updates online results to your races’s website DURING your race. And SpectaSport’s results are mobile optimized for easy accessibility on phones, iPads or even the old computer in grandma’s living room that’s four time zones away. Runners can even access their results from their phone without downloading any special apps, simply by scanning the QR code on the front of SpectaSport’s bibs.
Your awards ceremony is a terrible time to discover age and gender errors. It happens every race. Couples accidentally wear each other’s bibs. “Kelly” is listed as a female, but is actually a male. First place in the 50-59 age group is actually only 35 years old. These errors can have a domino effect on your results and throw your award ceremony into chaos. The SpectaSport system incorporates our instant results kiosks into a data feedback system so that runners can easily and simply report these types of database errors back to the race timing staff, who can then correct them immediately, before the awards report is calculated. Better results mean happier runners and more relaxed race directors.
SpectaSport uses the most advanced “RM” race timing technology from US Sports Timing, based on the same basic technology as EZ-Pass. Combined with SpectaSport’s integrated online registration, the SpectaSport system makes the Race Directors’ life easier than ever before. SpectaSport comes to your race fully self-contained with all of our own generators, tables and everything else we need to support your race. And, because equipment sometimes fails, SpectaSport provides multiple redundancies so that you will get your results no matter what. We even provide you with race bibs with disposable race timing chips already embedded.
Why are disposable chips so important? Not only do disposable chips simplify race logistics and reduce the number of volunteers that are needed, Nicholas Belasco D.O*., a dual certified Family Medicine/Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist, says SpectaSport’s disposable race timing chips, in conjunction with our well-designed finish lines that don’t require an old-fashioned “chute”, significantly increase the safety of running race participants:
“Besides the obvious risks of collision or creating a bottleneck at the finish line,” wrote Dr. Belasco in an email to SpectaSport after experiencing our race timing service for the first time, “the act of stopping an athlete in their tracks right as they complete the race is dangerous — because that is the precise physiologic mechanism for Exercise Associated Collapse (EAC), which is a type of orthostatic hypotension to which anyone exercising hard can succumb. The body needs to “cool down” following a maximal cardiovascular effort, that’s why we have people keep walking after a race, so that their heart rate and blood pressure have a few seconds to adjust. When you don’t let people adjust, they run the risk of passing out right at the finish line, which can be very dangerous. I have seen this happen at races so many times, that now it is part of my pre-race walkthrough that I go speak to the race timing people and ask them to collect the ankle race timing devices a hundred yards from the finish line so that the participants have a chance to slow down and stabilize before they ask them to stop and bend down to take off their devices.”
How have other race timing companies reacted toDr. Belasco’s vast, on-the-street medical experience?“I am frequently met with opposition,” he continued, “as the timing devices are expensive, and the timers are often worried that people will walk off with them. It is a significant (for medical personnel) logistical irritation at best, and at worst has the potential to ruin a race for any number of participants. That is why I prefer a timing tag like the SpectaSport. The tags are small and disposable, allowing the racers to walk around while wearing them and cool off, significantly reducing the number of EAC cases (as well as collision injuries) I see during a race. They allow the computers and judges to capture the data they need, without causing more medical and logistical problems for the medical team and without putting race participants at un-necessary risk.”
SpectaSport’s job is to make your life easier, and your race better. We are not just race timers, we can help you through all the organizational details that make the difference between an “OK” race and a “Great” race that earns more respect, more recognition and more income for your organization or charity. We specialize in Charity 5K races, and can provide you with advice, marketing/publicity, background music and a professional finish line (not PVC pipes in concrete-filled paint buckets like one of our competitors). At SpectaSport, we don’t believe that spending more and making less is “good enough” for your race. We believe that promoters and their charities should make more money because they have chip timing, not less. We believe that the safety of your competitors is more important than the convenience of your timer. And we believe that “good enough” isn’t good enough for participants or promoters. If you believe that “good enough” isn’t good enough for YOUR race timing either, contact SpectaSport right now at 610-397-1950 or email info@SpectaSport.com.
